Samos is widely regarded as one of the greenest of the Greek islands. It’s an idyllic paradise that offers numerous beach-lined shores and almost guaranteed good weather. It’s thanks to the quasi-permanent sunshine that vineyards thrive on the island. Those lucky enough to pay Samos a visit should not miss the opportunity to enlighten themselves in the history and process of Muscat wine production. What is the connection between Samos and METAXA? The sweet Muscat wine of Samos is an essential ingredient of METAXA; METAXA is a truly one-of- kind amber spirit crafted from wine distillates aged in oak, Muscat wines from the Aegean islands, mostly from Samos, and a blend of Mediterranean herbs and botanicals that is a secret since 1888. METAXA sources the Muscat from Samos via direct agreements with local vine growers. The wine is vinified on Samos and shipped to the House of Metaxa in Athens, to mature and to be married with the other ingredients and give us METAXA.

To celebrate the Terroir of Samos and to strengthen its connection with the island, in 2017 METAXA acquired, a vineyard on the terraced slopes of Mount Ambelos. Since then, the vineyard has been organically certified and has become a testing ground for innovation in agricultural practices.

Nestled within the vineyard, today we find “METAXA LIKNON” , the “Home” of METAXA on Samos. Evolving within and around stone structures and lush nature, LIKNON offers its guests an exclusive experience focused on the terroir of Samos, the House’s legacy and craftsmanship and its commitment to a more sustainable future, all expressed through the conviviality of authentic Greek hospitality. The Estate opened to the public for the first time in 2023.

At METAXA LIKNON visitors are invited to experience the art of crafting METAXA in a space internationally awarded for its unique architecture and landscape. A visit at LIKNON is an experience for visitors to the island looking for an authentic taste of the Greek way of life. Visitors will walk among the vineyards of LIKNON and learn about the Muscat grape and its cultivation, and how the Muscat wine becomes part of the METAXA spirit.

The pinnacle of the LIKNON experience arrives at sunset. Visitors gather to enjoy a glass of METAXA and gaze as the sun dips into the Aegean, painting the landscape orange.

A tour of LIKNON includes tasting of selected METAXA products and is a captivating experience for all the senses. For season 2024, LIKNON will be open to the public from mid May to mid October. Online booking is required as the tours can host up to 18 guests.

The LIKNON vineyard is dedicated to the cultivation of the “Samos” Muscat grape, also known as “Small berried” grape. Part of it is planted with 80-year-old vines and yearly production of grapes does not exceed 300kg/acre.
