Our Grape Varieties
In the heart of Lesvos, in the vineyards of Karionas and Megalochori, Oinoforos creates fine wines that highlight the rich heritage and unique identity of the island. With deep knowledge of the art of viticulture and respect for the land, grape varieties are cultivated with passion and care, embodying the authenticity and diversity of the Lesvian vineyard.
The Oinoforos vineyards host exceptional Greek varieties such as Assyrtiko, Athiri, Mandilaria, Fokiano and Vapsa. Each grape expresses its unique character, and through modern winemaking methods, as well as traditional techniques, wines combine authenticity with innovation.
A new addition to this winemaking venture is the cultivation of a vineyard along with an olive grove in the area of Moria, just 500 meters from the Roman Aqueduct. Specifically, this involves the Malagousia variety, a Greek white grape variety that has been revived in recent years, known for its intense aromatic characteristics. The wine produced from Malagousia stands out for its floral aromas, such as jasmine and citrus blossoms, as well as fruity notes of peach, pear and melon. The taste is rich, with medium acidity and often a buttery texture, making it ideal as an aperitif or pairing with food.
The goal of this initiative is to connect the visitor-friendly winery at Kara Tepe with the vineyard and offer guided tours and wine tastings at the place where the winemaking journey begins. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to admire the Roman Aqueduct, one of the island’s most significant archaeological monument, dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD. Built by the Romans, the aqueduct supplied water to the ancient city of Mytilene, transporting water from the Agiasos village. This impressive monument is a testament to Roman engineering and a symbol of the economic and social prosperity of the time. Today, the aqueduct represents the architectural heritage of Lesvos.
The balanced climate of Lesvos, the seas, and the distinctive soils contribute to the creation of wines with delicate flavors, vibrant aromas and a long aftertaste. The local varieties have perfectly adapted to the island’s unique conditions, producing wines that reflect the gastronomic heritage and natural beauty of the region.
Characteristics of the varieties:
- Assyrtiko: One of Greece’s finest white grape varieties, known for its high acidity and strong character.
- Athiri: A traditional white variety with a subtle aroma and fruity character. It is characterized by low acidity, producing balanced wines with a pleasant taste.
